So Einfach Ist Das unveils a lost chapter in East German jazz history — the powerful early recordings of Ulrich Gumpert Quartett, made between 1968 and 1972 for the Rundfunk der DDR. Before his later work in free jazz and the celebrated group Synopsis, Gumpert led one of the most dynamic rhythm sections of the Klaus Lenz Orchestra, blending soul, funk, and modern jazz into a raw, forward-looking sound. This collection documents that vibrant era, when the GDR scene was bursting with youthful energy, stylistic daring, and underground experimentation.
Joined by guitarist Günter Dobrowolsky, bassist Gert Lübke, and drummer Günter “Baby” Sommer, Gumpert’s quartet created propulsive, Hammond-driven grooves that fused jazz-rock with psychedelic textures. Guest appearances by saxophonist and flautist Günther Fischer add a soulful dimension to tracks like “Hallo Ulli.” The LP is a lovingly restored artifact of a vital yet underdocumented period in East German jazz, produced by Tom Sky for Sound Essence Records and presented with vintage artwork and retro design.
